Black Bears and Acorns "Wild West"

—  wildlife Sequences —

Behavior: Black bears raid acorn woodpecker caches as winter approaches.

For: BBC “Wild West: Americas Great Frontier” High Country episode

Info: This sequence was filmed just outside of Sequoia National Park in California after an intense fire season in the high country. Black bears came to the lower elevations to find food and were seeking out acorns en masse - having a literal feast in the high reaches of the biggest trees. Green acorns were their favorite fare, but raiding the occasional acorn woodpecker cache full of dried acorns was not out of the question! They were so focused on their caloric intake, we were able to walk around with them at close distance without any disturbance.
